Below are the first steps in getting involved in canine sports.

1. Identify your dog's area of interest.  Choose the sport that best suits your lifestyle and dog’s ability.

2. Locate a dog club that guides you step by step through the training process of the sport of choice.

List of a few canine sports that might spark your interest:

Freestyle Flying Disc  - This canine sport involves a handler/dog team interacting in a game of disc throwing and catching.   Each team is allotted a period of time to demonstrate various throws and catches while performing to music.  Most popular breeds utilized in this sport are Border Collies,  Australian Shepherds, Australian Cattle Dogs, Jack Russell Terriers and mixes of these breeds.  

Canine Agility - A timed event that involves a handler leading a dog through various obstacles, tunnels, jumps, weaves, etc...

Most popular breeds utilized in this sport are Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Shetland Sheepdogs, Papillons, Belgian Shepherds, Belgian Malinois, Retrievers, Jack Russell Terriers and mixes of these breeds.

Dog Diving - This is best described as a long jump where the distance of the dog’s leap into the pool is measured and documented.  This requires the handler to toss a toy into the pool in order to motivate their dog to jump as far as possible. Most popular dog breeds utilized in this sport are Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, Belgian Malinois, German Shorthair Pointers,  Golden Retrievers, Border Collies and mixes of these breeds.

Weave Pole Racing - This sport requires a dog to race head to head with another dog through a series of weave poles. Each dog is required to complete all 30 or 60 poles without error.  Most popular breeds that are utilized in this sport are Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdogs, Border Collies, Australian Shepherds, Doberman Pinschers, Jack Russell Terriers, Shetland Sheepdogs and mixes of these breeds.
